Co-development of the YouThrive Toolkit for Differentiated Care Service Delivery for Adolescents, with Adolescents

Abstract (Poster Presentation)

Background

South Africa has more HIV-positive adolescents than children, with 260,000 new adolescent infections and 55,000 AIDS-related deaths in 2016. Adolescents face unique challenges, including low healthcare access, adherence issues, and caregiver barriers. Effective interventions integrate targeted counselling, caregiver engagement, community settings, digital tools, and meaningful adolescent involvement for better outcomes.

Objectives

To develop a Differentiated Care Service Delivery Toolkit (including Curriculi, Job Aids, IEC Material) for Adolescents to improve the UNAIDS 90-90-90 Indicators in South Africa

Methods

The co-development process involved the synthesis of information gathered from the following processes:

• Extensive literature reviews of AYFS strategies and job aides and studies

• Review of extensive literature on Youth participation in Healthcare

• Focus group discussions with Adolescents

• Development of youth advisory teams

• Engaging adolescents into off-site Camps where focus groups and nominal group processes

• Key informant interviews with key stakeholders implementing AYFS

• Interviews with adolescents

• Workshops with Primary caregivers of adolescents
